Electrocardiogram
ECG is a test to detect any abnormality of the heart. Everybody must have this test done regularly. Patients with diabetes are at higher risk of heart attacks (sometimes silent). Where indicated, a stress ECG will be performed.
Stress ECG
A stress test, also called an exercise stress test, shows how your heart works during physical activity. Because exercise makes your heart pump harder and faster, an exercise stress test can reveal problems with blood flow within your heart. A stress test usually involves walking on a treadmill or riding a stationary bike during which time your heart rhythm, blood pressure and breathing are monitored.Your doctor may recommend a stress test if you have signs or symptoms of coronary artery disease or an irregular heart rhythm (arrhythmia). Thiswill guide treatment decisions, measure the effectiveness of treatment or determine the severity if you’ve already been diagnosed with a heart condition.
Assessment of leg blood flow
The ABPI test is a popular tool for the non-invasive assessment of peripheral vascular disease (PVD). This is important as the early detection of blood flow abnormalities in the leg can prevent foot amputations in patients, especially those with diabetes.
Nerve Assessments
Diabetes commonly affects the sensory nerves leading to a decrease in sensation, especially in the legs and feet. Peripheral nerve damage is also associated with neuropathic pain (tingling, burning, sharp, or aching pain). Thus, testing for nerve damage can indicate the severity of the diabetes and measures that can be taken to halt its progress. Commonly, a lack of sensation is the leading cause for wounds on the feet which lead to non-healing ulcers and ultimately end up in amputations.
